Sustainability through the Lens of the Triple Bottom LIne

This page is dedicated to the sharing of practices that promote sustainable living.    I will be delighted to share useful suggestions sent to me by email at stenzel@msu.edu.

Sustainability is *"Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the needs of future generations."

(*Source:  Our Common Future - the UN Burndtland Report of 1987)
Sustainability can be evaluated through the three legs of the Triple Bottom Line (TBL).
TBL is based on  "Economy, [Social] Equity, and Environment."
Two other ways to refer to the TBL are:  "The Three E's" or "People, Planet, Profits."

A more sustainable business law meeting:
Contributed by:  Paulette L. Stenzel
Description:  The Midwest Academy of Legal Studies requires that each paper presenter bring twenty-five copies of his or her paper for distribution at our annual meeting in Chicago. This year I asked for and was given permission to post my paper on this website instead of bringing copies.  I handed out my business card with this website address instead of the paper.  That saved 625 pieces of paper. (15 pages x 25 copies.)

Sustainable Christmas Greetings
Contributed By: Paulette L. Stenzel
Description:  For those friends for whom I have email addresses, I am sending an emailed Christmas letter instead of spending money and using resources to send a card and letter via U.S. mail.  I am contributing at least $2 for each emailed letter to KIVA http://kiva.org  to sponsor two micro-loans, one each in Peru and in Nicaragua.  If I send more than fifty cards letters and cards, I will sponsor a third loan.  This saves resources (paper and energy) and the money is circulated in a sustainable way.  When I am repaid, I can lend the funds to someone else through KIVA.

Organic Foods - Sharing information
Contributed By: Evan Braedon
Description: My friend Evan Braedon shares the newsletter Organic Bytes published by the Organic Consumers Association at www.organicconsumers.org.  Each month, he places copies of the one-page newsletter in five to ten bookstores and gathering places around the Lansing, Michigan area.
